DUGALD STUART MONUMENT
A memorial to the Scottish philosopher Dugald
Stewart (1753 - 1828) modelled on the Choragic Monument
of Lysicrates in Athens, Greece; comprising nine fluted columns
surrounding an elevated Urn, stepped base and ornamental
Dugald Steward was a professor at Edinburgh University and
the Chair of Moral Philosophy until his death in 1828.
The structure was completed three years later according to
the designs of William Henry Playfair also responsible for
the National Monument and City Observatory among his many
other notable architectural works.
