Nelson's Monument (built 1807 -1816) was a
tribute to the Eighteenth Century Admiral Nelson, celebrated
for his victory at The Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
resembles a telescope and the 762kg time
ball at the top of is dropped in conjunction with
the firing of the One
O'clock Gun from Edinburgh
Castle and both were originally used as the naval signal
by which ship chronometers were set.
Inside there is a visitors information centre. The tower
offers a fantastic panoramic view of Edinburgh.
