PLAYFAIR MONUMENT

Situated on the South East corner of The City Observatory this monument was designed by John Playfair in 1826 to commemorate William Henry Playfair the man who designed many of the buildings around Calton Hill including the Observatory itself, The unfinished National Monument (1826), The Dugald Stewart Monument (1831) and the nearby Georgian Regent and Royal Terraces.

He also designed many other prominent buidings in Edinburgh including:

The Royal Scottish Academy 1826
St. Stephen's Church 1827-28
Donaldson's College 1851
and National Gallery of Scotland 1859 which was opened to the public two years after his death.
